    425 N. Fourth Ave. Downtown / 4th Ave / University

    624-3354

This cozy addition to the diverse Fourth Avenue food scene is open late—really, really late: 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. The guys behind the counter are creating simple, inexpensive sandwiches that follow the classic deli theme. With plenty of choices, including low-carb and vegetarian-friendly options, this little place is sure to be hopping for lunch and post-drinks. Plan on calling in a to-go order because seating is quite limited. (12-12-13)

  • Fifth Street Deli and Market

5071 E. Fifth St. East side

    325-3354

This is exactly what a neighborhood market/deli should be: small, cozy and nothing fancy, with friendly service. The food is pretty good, too; the noodle kugel is a real winner, and the brisket is better than homemade. Corned beef comes in extra-lean and regular varieties, and the soups are popular. Whether you stop to get a meal to-go or dine in, this deli should be on your list of regular dining spots. (12-25-08)

  • The Sausage Shop Meat Market and Deli

    1015 W. Prince Road, Suite 141. Central

    888-1701

This sandwich joint is tucked away in a strip mall in a neighborhood that might be described as “less than desirable.” But despite the terrible parking and the complete lack of seating (plan your order to go, or don’t plan to go at all), the sandwiches are awesome. If you like meat, this is the place. Smoked meat, cured meat, grilled meat … you name it, they’ve got it. With more than 50 delicious sandwiches on the menu, there’s always something new to try. And don’t skip the house-made pickles and sides. (1-31-13)

  • Shlomo and Vito’s New York Delicatessen

    2870 E. Skyline Drive. Northwest

    529-3354

Where do you go in the Sonoran Desert for smoked whitefish or matzo brei? Head on over to Shlomo and Vito’s, which is more of a restaurant than a true deli; there’s a full dinner menu in addition to an assortment of deli offerings. Desserts are made in-house. The portions are huge, and the patio offers views you can’t get in the Big Apple. There are Italian faves as well, but stick to the Jewish side of the menu. (6-19-08)
