Concert Calendar

Friday, May 26

IDIOT FLESH with THEN TINGARI and FIBULATOR

The mother of invention himself, Frank Zappa is king of crimson with a Queen voice singing Mother Goose lyrics over drumming from the tribe of Crash Worship. That's a slightly loose description of the kind of wacky avant garde Oakland schizophrenia you get from Idiot Flesh. Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave. Call 628-1650 for information.

KHENANY

The beautifully soothing, stimulating music of the Andes blends with salsa, rumba, cha cha, bossa nova and samba in Khenany. Most of their songs are sung in Spanish, but they also play selections in Qechua (the ancient Inca language) and English.

In between songs members of the group explain some of the folklore and history of their music, as well as describe some of the their exotic instruments. The concert is sponsored by the Hispanic Cultural Showcase. TCC Leo Rich Theater, 260 S. Church Ave. Call 881-3947, 623-8030 or 888-8816 for information.

TERESA TUDURY

A renaissance woman, Tudury belts out cabaret torch songs in a rich voice suffused with blues; "I'm Moving On," "Love On The Run," "Open Up Your Heart" and "I'm Gonna Trust My Man."

She also plays guitar and tosses out one-liners with the best of them. Her songs "The Very Last Heterosexual Alive" and "When Women Get Together" show her funny side in a musical context.

Tudury also delivers standards, including "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Melancholy Baby."

The LA Weekly had this to say about her: "Why she's still pluggin' away as an unknown in the entertainment capital of the world is a total mystery--this musical comedian is totally engrossing." Southwest Center for Music, 2175 N. Sixth Ave. Call 884-1220 for information.

AL PERRY, SCENIC, THE RICHIES, LIBERTY SCHOOL, WEIRD LOVEMAKERS, RESONARS, GREASY CHICKEN, PORKTORTA and HELLDRIVER

Let's pick one band out of this monstrous outdoor extravaganza: Scenic. They hail from the Valley of the Sun and play instrumentals that melt like mozzarella over spaghetti western composer Ennio Morricone's head.

"While some could see Incident At Cima (Scenic's new album) as a soundtrack for a non-existent film, it is intended more as music to listen to while experiencing the East Mojave Desert in person," Savage Republic founder and Scenic mastermind Bruce Licher said in an interview with Alternative Press.

Let's pick another band: The Richies. They're Germany's version of The Ramones.

All nine bands will play on the outdoor stage. Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. Call 622-8848 for information.

On this date in 1969, John and Yoko began their Bed-In For Peace in Montreal. Christ, you know that sounds easy.

Sunday, May 28

SANTANA with SONIA DADA

"Evil Ways," "Jingo," "Sé A Cabo," "Hope You're Feeling Better," "Samba Para Ti," "Everybody's Everything," "Persuasion," "Oye Como Va," "Everything's Coming Our Way" and of course, the song we at The Weekly play at our luaus as we dance naked around a burning stack of Arizona Daily Stars and Tucson Citizens--"Soul Sacrifice." Pima County Fairgrounds, one mile south of I-10 on Houghton Road. Call 792-3930 for information.

T-Bone Walker was born in 1910; Billy Vera in 1940; John Fogerty in 1945.

Tuesday, May 30

CHRISTY FRONT DRIVE with MAKEUP

Emocore equals hardcore with more emotion. Get teary eyed (and bloody eared) with Colorado's Christy Front Drive.

Makeup features a former member of the D.C. and Dischord band, Nation Of Ulysses. Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave. Call 628-1650 for more information.

Wednesday, May 31

DAVE'S BIG DELUXE and MUSTARD PLUG

Ska was the music of revolution. When Jamaicans were ready to drive the Brits from their island in the 1960s, it was this double-time dance music that provided the soundtrack for the exodus of the English.

Now, Mustard Plug comes from Grand Rapids, Michigan, so they haven't driven any imperialists from their homeland (that we know of, anyway). But next time they go home, perhaps they could play their funky music for the Michigan Militia and their brethren and drive them off to a place far, far away in a galaxy unknown. We can hope, can't we? Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave. Call 628-1650 for information.

It's 1958 and Dick Dale plays "Let's Go Trippin' " for the very first time, siring surf rock in the process.

Thursday, June 1

THE ELECTRIC HELLFIRE CLUB with PENAL COLONY

Here's a show for everyone's conscience: Donald Wildmon. "Welcome to another meeting of the Electric Hellfire Club...to conjure sounds and images from the darkest depths of hell. Hear demon trumpets and devil trombones...."

That's part of the club's "Invitation To Damnation" kicking off their new Kiss The Goat album.

If you get the scary idea that they're sort of into a Satan worship thing, don't worry, they are.

Songs like "Hellfire!," "In The Temple Of Flesh," "Incubus," and "Slaughter Of Elysium" are dance happy, rock and roll bows to Beelzebub. Bring a virgin and make this a real party. Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. Call 622-8848 for information.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was released 28 years ago. Today is also Jerry (the "Beav") Mathers' birthday. He's 47 years old and still looks like he's just turned eight. Drummer Charlie Watts was born in 1941 on this date.

Friday, June 2

SUPERNOVA with DOWNTRAIN

The members of Supernova claim to be from another planet. Perhaps when they go back home they could take a few people with them: the Michigan Militia, Rush Limbaugh, Phil Gramm, Ed Moore, etc. We're still hoping. Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave. Call 628-1650 for information.

Saturday, June 3

HALF-JAPANESE with THE RICHIES, HELLDRIVER and WEIRD LOVEMAKERS

Half-Japanese front person Jad Fair is sort of the Forrest Gump of riotous, barbaric rock and roll. He and the changing cast of the group have been doing strange, untuned things to their guitars and other instruments since 1977 and have managed to inadvertently influence scores of underground bands in the process.

Some song titles might give you an idea of what Jad and friends are like: "Ouija Board Summons Satan," "Thing With A Hook," "Stripping For Cash," "My Sordid Past" and "Ventriloquism Made Easy."

It isn't all raucous punk mayhem--at times they've veered dangerously close to making mainstream pop music. Absolutely no one outside the band knows what they'll deliver on this occasion. Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave. Call 628-1650 for information.

Today is Curtis Mayfield's birthday. Play "Super Fly" 53 times, one for each year.

Monday, June 5

MARCIA BALL, STEVE RILEY and BEAU JOCQUE

Ball is back pounding and caressing the piano, bringing New Orleans with her everywhere she goes. She'll play funky, soulful, jittery numbers from Blue House, Gatorhythms, Hot Tamale Baby and Soulful Dress--her four albums on Rounder Records (the concert is part of Rounder's "Red Hot Louisiana Bands Tour").

Beau Jocque and The Zydeco Hi-Rollers just released a new live CD called Git It, Beau Jocque! It's 60 minutes of rollicking zydeco recorded at Slim's Y-Ki-Ki Lounge in Opelousas and Harry's Lounge in Breaux Bridge (isn't he an actor?).

Riley brings yet another aspect of Louisiana to Tucson--Cajun music. Full of fiddle and red beans, his music is built on the legacy of his mentor, Dewey Balfa. The concert is sponsored by KXCI community radio. The Rock, 136 N. Park Ave. Call 623-1000 for information.

Tuesday, June 8

Nancy Sinatra was born 55 years ago.

BILLY BACON AND THE FORBIDDEN PIGS WITH ED'S REDEEMING QUALITIES

The porksters return to the Porcine Pueblo with a new album in hand--The Other White Meat. Bacon's band plays raucous roots rock incorporating Tex-Mex, blues, rockabilly and country music.

Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. Call 622-8848 for information.

BéLA FLECK AND THE FLECKTONES

Béla and The Flecktones will have thousands of miles of recent road travel under their belts by the time they get to Tucson. They started this Tales From The Acoustic Planet tour with concerts in Mongolia, China, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore. Other acoustic destinations include Ireland and Czechoslovakia.

But it's only here in the good old U.S. of A. that Fleck's famous friends will be sitting in on concerts, just as they did on the new Acoustic Planet album. If you go to this concert you may see one or more of the following: keyboardist Chick Corea, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, pianist Bruce Hornsby, guitarist Tony Rice, oboist Paul McCandless, bassist Edgar Meyer or dobroist Jerry Douglas.

It all depends on their commitments elsewhere, so not even Béla knows who will show up where and when.

One guest Fleckheads can count on seeing is mandolinist Sam Bush. He'll be there alongside the rhythm section of Victor Lemonte Wooten and Future Man (a.k.a. Roy Wooten), and Mr. Fleck himself, of course. Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave. Call 327-4809 for information.

Saturday, June 10

SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS, THE FELLS and AL FOUL AND THE SHAKES

Not only do they toss fried chicken into the audience, but SCOTS plays rock and roll, too. (See Rock Jar for more info on the band.) Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave. Call 628-1650 for admission information.

In 1966 Janis Joplin performed for the first time with Big Brother and The Holding Company at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. If you were there and claim to remember it, you're lying. You were too high to remember anything that night.

Sunday, June 11

JUNE OF 44

This new band on Chicago's Touch and Go label features ex-members of Rodan, Hoover and Codeine. Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave. Call 628-1650 for information.

MEDISKI, MARTIN AND WOOD with FRIENDS OF DEAN MARTIN

Mediski, Martin and Wood have been described as a trio. They're also said to play a rhythmic, danceable form of jazz fusion that has gained them a cult following in big cities. If that isn't enough to get you out to hear them, well, you're probably just too hard to please. Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. Call 622-8848 for information.

Tuesday, June 13

BLACKTOP with THE MIDNITES and ZERO KINGS

Got your Sony Trinitron television turned all the way up on the shopping channel while the volume knob on your $199 receiver-AM-FM-turntable-CD-player-remote-controlled-gizmo is cranked completely to the right? Blow your woofers and little mind with some white trash and trailer park rockabilly by Blacktop. Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave. Call 628-1650 for information.

Friday, June 16

CIRCUS RIDICULOUS

It's a punk carnival under the big top of the DPC, featuring absurd circus acts, human oddities and some quasi-famous punk stars, including a member of G.G. Allin's band (hopefully it isn't one of those feces-flinging guys) and somebody from Rich Kids On LSD. Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave. Call 628-1650 for information.

Brian Eno was born in 1947.

Saturday, June 17

YO LA TENGO

They're coming all the way from Hoboken to entertain you. By the way, the name of the band comes from the cry of a Spanish-speaking outfielder. See, you're entertained already.

Yo La Tengo has just released its seventh album, Electr-O-Pura (which means "to be pureed in an electrical device"), on Matador Records.

The members of the group are known for mixing subtle covers of little-known songs in with their noisy popped-up rock and roll. They've redone tunes by Cat Stevens, The Kinks, John Cale, NRBQ, Daniel Johnston, the Flamin' Groovies, The Scene Is Now and the Flying Burrito Brothers over the course of their decade-long careers. Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave. Call 628-1650 for more information.

The Kinks kicked off their first tour of the U.S. in 1965. That's thirty years ago, boomers.

Tuesday, June 20

Friday, June 30

TOTAL CHAOS WITH BATTALION OF SAINTS, FUCKO AND THE SOCIAL OUTCASTS

Chaos is the Epitaph band ready to be the new Rancid. They've got that London/New York of 1979 look--spiked hair, tats, metal rings pierced through body parts intended to remain whole and lots of black leather. Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave. Call 628-1650 for information.
